ツンデレ (Tsundere)

“Stupid Vordpress, it’s not like I’m posting because I like you or anything, okay, maybe I do, but… NEVER MIND that! That’s not the point!”

Via Sankaku Complex

A Tsundere is a play on two Japanese words: tsuntsun (ツンツン) and deredere (デレデレ) with tsuntsun meaning a person who is cranky, moody, mildly cruel, somewhat violent, somewhat bitchy and deredere a person who is affectionate, loving, sentimental. Combine the two and you have a Tsundere.

Examples include:

Shana from Shakugan no Shana

Louise from Zero no Tsukaima

Haruhi from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Taiga from Toradora!

Kagami from Lucky Star

CC from Code Gay-Ass: LeDouche of the Rebellion (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Mion Sonozaki from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Yuka from Elfen Lied

And maybe Izumi from He Is My Master!

…and many more!+

A Tsundere personality type is a huge factor in Moe, more info on what Moe is later on. A Tsundere, is usually a female, although the term is gender-free. She might not know if she likes a certain guy or not, and so, approaches him violently, or defensively. Such as Louise, who calls Saito, her familiar, her dog. In Shakugan no Shana, in the episode where Shana sees the kissing scene in the drama, defensively responds “I’ll never do it with you!” to Yuji. Of course, Yuji doesn’t know what’s going on.

If you’ve noticed, a Tsundere is usually a loli-type character. (More info on what loli is later on.)

Their moods aren’t subtle. The Tsundere may be angry for a minute and extremely affectionate the next. However, what puts a Tsundere apart from a bipolar person is that they have various traits. They may give people, usually the guy, the cold shoulder. Avoid talking to him. They may take a violent approach, like in Toradora! where Taiga tries to stab Ryuji Takasu in the head with a wooden sword in his house. Another common trait is smirking or yelling at the guy, like in Zero no Tsukaima, Louise will often say “Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!” (Shut up, shut up, shut up!) to Saito. Shana does the exact same thing.

Why it’s popular:

The loving personality of these characters with this personality type is just as intense as their agressive personality. The Tsundere personality has become so popular, it’s become used outside of Japanese media, even though the term was just born in 2002.

Lucky Star helped publicize the term in 2007.

Rie Kugimiya is the major voice actress for Tsundere-type Anime characters. Why? Because she’s good at it. She’s voiced Louise, Shana, Alphonse Elric, Kagura (Gintama) and the recent Taiga from Toradora!

However, as popular as it may be, there are still many people around the world who do not know what it is. The day it becomes common in Spanish TV Drama, I’ll be posting a huge article. Imagine, a Tsundere Drama in Spanish!

Why the blog name?

TsundereWork’s Moe blog is a blog that can either hate on something, or like something, but in the end, it loves everything, that’s why I write about them. It’s about having a blog that you love, that has the stuff you love. Quite simple, really.
